When the new generation is judged only by their ability to pass paper tests, the old generation can't just sit there and say to the kids, "You know nothing but books!" The same goes for my student today, I believe she is smarter than me because she passed the harder test and got into a better department in a better university. However, most of her childhood was spent studying and she had no time to do anything but sleep before the next study time. Now she feels shame in being Thai but not knowing how to cook Thai food at all.
I would say this is a great match: the offer from my school and the willingness to learn. It's never too late to start something good. And this time we started with how to work with the knife like a professional cook. Today we cooked Pad Thai and it was a lot of work for someone who was cooking for the first time ever. Yes, the class took a bit long because at each step she paid great attention to detail. But I have to admit that she did a magnificent job with her Pad Thai. And I can honestly say this: her first Pad Thai was way better than my first. So I'm very happy that now there is one more Thai person who knows how to cook, and can cook her real Thai food. Keep it up lady :)
